The House o' Hill is situated in Bargrennan on the very edge of the Galloway Forest Park.
Close by is the Glentrool Forest Visitor Centre and Loch Trool,
a spectacular loch overlooked by Bruce's Stone, a monument commemorating King Robert the Bruce's victory over the
Earl of Northampton's army in 1307.
The Merrick, southern Scotland's highest mountain at nearly 2,800ft,
can be climbed from here.
The Galloway Forest Park, the UK's largest
area of forest, is also the only officially designated Dark Sky Park outside North
America. Because of the very low population, there is virtually no light pollution, making this area ideal for astronomers
to view the night skies.
The park is a stunning wilderness where it is possible to walk for miles without meeting
another soul - the perfect retreat away from it all! There are many walking trails designed for all abilities from light walks
to treks for the more experienced.
The area boasts world class mountain biking routes and facilities for bikers
of all abilities with the 7stanes.
Close by too is the Southern Upland Way
coast-to-coast walk. It runs 212 miles (340 km) from Portpatrick on the south-west coast of Scotland to Cockburnspath on the
eastern seaboard and passes a few hundred yards from the House o' Hill Hotel, making "The Hoose" the
perfect stopping-off point for refreshments and a well-earned rest!
Other nearby attractions include:
