We're the only Inn situated in the Galloway Forest Park

The House o' Hill is the only Inn to be situated within the Galloway Forest Park.

Close by is the Glentrool Forest Visitor Centre and Loch Trool, a spectacular loch overlooked by Bruce's Stone, a monument commemorating King Robert the Bruce's victory over the Earl of Northampton's army in 1307.

The Merrick, southern Scotland's highest mountain at nearly 2,800ft, can be climbed from here. The Galloway Forest Park, the UK's largest area of forest, is also the only officially designated Dark Sky Park outside North America. Because of the very low population, there is virtually no light pollution, making this area ideal for astronomers to view the night skies.

The park is a stunning wilderness where it is possible to walk for miles without meeting another soul - the perfect retreat away from it all! There are many walking trails designed for all abilities from light walks to treks for the more experienced.

The area boasts world class mountain biking routes and facilities for bikers of all abilities with the 7stanes. Close by too is the Southern Upland Way coast-to-coast walk. It runs 212 miles (340 km) from Portpatrick on the south-west coast of Scotland to Cockburnspath on the eastern seaboard and passes a few hundred yards from the House o' Hill Hotel, making "The Hoose" the perfect stopping-off point for refreshments and a well-earned rest!

Other nearby attractions include: - Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town; The Medieval city of Whithorn - The Cradle of Christianity in Scotland; Excellent fishing opportunities on the River Cree, the Minnoch and the many surrounding lochs; Excellent golf; Spectacular coastline .

This area is truly outstanding and much closer than the Highlands from both England and Ireland!

What our customers say:

"It is always nice to find a place to stay which is above your expectations. House O'Hill is one of these places."

Stayed for one night while on business travel in the area. I stayed in the cottage adjacent to the main building. Lovely little place. One of the comfiest bed I've had the pleasure to sleep in while staying away from home. Great living area to relax in with tv / dvd player and kitchen with all that you require. Fantastic evening meal in the main building with great choices and really good decent size portions. I had a massive strip of pork belly twice the size that other restaurants serve. Got this place saved as a place to stay again.

Friendly welcome, nicely decorated. Starters were excellent. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his first venison burger, and the risotto was very good. I'm very particular about my food, and their menu was very appetising, and not at all run of the mill. We didn't have room for dessert! We will definitely be going back. The meal was very reasonably priced, for such well prepared, locally sourced, fresh food. Thanks!

Stayed December 2016, travelled as a couple
